FCIC Celebrates English Month 2025 Through Showcase of Talent and Critical Thinking

The Franciscan College of the Immaculate Conception (FCIC) concluded its 2025 English Month celebration on November 28, 2025, at the Students’ Lounge, highlighting the theme “Bridges of Understanding: Reading for Empathy, Critical Thinking, and Lifelong Learning.” The program featured performances, competitions, and student-led debates that underscored FCIC’s commitment to literacy, communication, and ethical awareness.

The program opened with a prayer led by Ms. Rezsa S. Enriquez, moderator of the Language and Literature Club, followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, the Baybay City Division Hymn, and the FCIC Hymn. Mr. Aldren Derecho delivered the opening message, emphasizing the vital role of literacy and reading in nurturing empathy and critical thinking.

Earlier, on November 20, 2025, the Spelling Bee competition for English Month was held. For the Junior High School division, the winners were Alessia Claire Cogtas (1st Place), Danica Gabrielle Palermo (2nd Place), and Gian Jose Castil (3rd Place). For Senior High School, the champions were Hermelo Coromias (1st Place), Beux Sebastian Fernandez (2nd Place), and Mile Vianney Ibanez (3rd Place) from Grade 11 STEM–Sincerity, Grade 12 STEM–Sincerity, and Grade 11 HUMSS–Honesty, respectively.

During the culmination program, Junior High students showcased their creativity in the Book Character Performance. Standing out among the performers were Mithelda Jeony Masbad, who won 1st Place, and Florian Blaise Dutullo, who earned 2nd Place. Their portrayal of The Three Little Pigs captivated the audience with strong characterization and expressive storytelling.

A major highlight of the culmination was the Battle of Brains Debate, where Senior High School students from various strands delivered thoughtful and critical arguments on the topic, “Who should lead the fight against government corruption: the youth and the public through peaceful civic actions, or the state through judicial and military institutions?” The discussion reflected principles of SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, which promotes reducing corruption, strengthening accountability, and empowering citizens to participate in shaping just societies.

The debate mechanics were explained by Mr. Aldren Derecho, while judges Mr. Rowen Jay Loquillano, Mr. Francis Niel Murry, and Mrs. Star-En Wenceslao ensured fairness throughout. The Grade 12 Affirmative Team—Missywrinah Dawn Casil, Lebron James Rosal, and Akeelah Martinez—claimed victory after presenting well-grounded arguments. The debate concluded with a handshake between both teams, symbolizing sportsmanship and unity.

To close the program, certificates were awarded to all participants, recognizing their dedication and exemplary performance. The English Month celebration successfully highlighted FCIC’s commitment to fostering communication skills, critical thinking, ethical awareness, and holistic development aligned with global goals—reflecting the institution’s mission of shaping articulate, informed, and empowered Franciscans.
