FCIC Graduate School Welcomes New Students with Eucharistic Celebration and Inspiring Orientation

Baybay City, Leyte – August 24, 2024 – The Franciscan College of the Immaculate Conception (FCIC) officially opened the academic year for its Graduate School Department with a Eucharistic celebration, followed by an orientation session that warmly welcomed new students to the institution.

The day began with a Eucharistic celebration at the FCIC Audio-Visual Room (AVR), bringing together graduate school faculty, staff, and students in a profound expression of faith and community. The celebration was presided over by Rev. Father Arthur Duarte, the school Chaplain, who, in his homily, emphasized the importance of the Holy Spirit in guiding the academic community. He encouraged attendees to embody the virtues of wisdom, understanding, and knowledge in both their academic and personal lives.

“As you embark on this challenging journey, reflect on your motivations—whether for a brighter future, to honor your parents’ sacrifices, or for your children,” Father Duarte said. “These are not just academic goals; they are expressions of love and commitment. The Holy Spirit is our source of inspiration and wisdom. Let us open our hearts to its guidance today, allowing it to shape our actions and decisions.”

The mass also featured a Rite of Commissioning for administrators, faculty, and non-teaching personnel for the 2024-2025 school year. This ceremony reaffirmed their commitment to the institution’s mission and values, calling each member to serve with dedication, compassion, and integrity in their respective roles. The Eucharistic celebration highlighted the Graduate School Department’s commitment to integrating faith with learning, setting a reflective and purpose-driven tone for the day.

After the spiritual reflection and renewal, the new graduate students were welcomed to FCIC with an orientation session that introduced them to the academic community and the values that define the institution.

The orientation began with a Welcome Address by Dr. Deowel Abapo, a distinguished faculty member of the Graduate School. Dr. Abapo’s address set a positive tone, encouraging students to embrace the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. He emphasized the importance of integrity and openness to growth during their graduate studies.

Following the address, participants from various graduate programs and faculty members were introduced, fostering a sense of community among the new students and the educators who will guide them through their academic journey.

Sister M. Amor Dapunan, OSF, Vice President for Academic Affairs, delivered an Inspirational Message emphasizing the importance of resilience and a passion for learning. Sister Amor encouraged students to excel academically while growing spiritually and ethically, in line with the core values of FCIC. She reminded them that the journey ahead, while demanding, would be deeply rewarding and transformative.

A presentation by Sister Maria Isabel Arnaiz, OSF, the School Registrar, followed, providing an overview of FCIC’s Philosophy, Vision, Mission, and Goals. Her talk offered a deeper understanding of the college’s commitment to holistic education grounded in Franciscan values. She emphasized the importance of aligning personal and academic goals with the institution’s mission to cultivate responsible and compassionate leaders.

Dr. Maria Victoria Gonzaga, Dean of the Graduate School, then provided detailed information on the policies specific to the Graduate School. She covered academic requirements, grading systems, and expectations, ensuring that students were well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

The orientation concluded with Closing Remarks from Dr. Avelina Oclinaria, who reminded students of the exciting journey ahead and the importance of dedication and commitment to personal and academic excellence.

The day’s events were more than just a kickoff to the academic year—they were a celebration of faith, community, and the students’ dedication to advancing their education at FCIC.
