Fostering Growth Through Compassion: FCIC’s Reading Mentoring Program Empowers Young Learners

In line with the school’s vision of being “a Christ-centered academic institution providing quality transformative Franciscan education,” the school president, Sister Mary Michael Bactong, OSF, spearheaded a remarkable Reading Mentoring Program at FCIC, grounded in the Franciscan values of compassion, service, and community. This program, which brought together the talented officers of the English Club Society and young learners, became a beacon of hope for improving children’s reading skills and building stronger relationships within the school community. Each English Club Society officer was paired with a child in need of reading assistance. This program clearly manifests how education, when rooted in love, service, and transformation, can bring out the best in both mentors and mentees, fulfilling the school’s vision of transformative education. The Reading Mentoring Program reached its pinnacle during the FCIC English Month Culmination, an event that highlighted the students’ progress and achievements. Each child stood proudly on stage, reading passages reflecting their progress throughout the program. The children’s performances were met with applause and admiration, with their mentors by their sides. At the culmination ceremony, both the children and their mentors were honored for their dedication. The young learners were commended for their impressive progress. At the same time, the mentors received heartfelt appreciation for their time, effort, and unwavering support. Sister Mary Michael expressed her gratitude to both groups, emphasizing the importance of community in education and the influence that one-on-one mentorship can have on a child’s development. Through the Reading Mentoring Program, Sister Mary Michael Bactong, OSF, and the English Club Society have reminded us of the importance of kindness and patience. Indeed, “to teach is to touch lives forever.”
